Causes and Symptoms
Gout is typically caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood can crystalize and form deposits, most commonly the big toe joint. Symptoms include pain, swelling, redness, stiffness and increased temperature.
Treatment
Gout can be treated with medications including:
- Antiinflammatory medications (such as NSAIDS)
- Corticosteroids
- Diet modification (avoid a diet heavy in purines, such as alcohol and red meat)
