What is Nail Fungus?

Toenail fungus is often caused by a fungal infection of the skin which can spread to the nails.

Causes and Symptoms

Once toenail fungus has infiltrated the nail plate it can be difficult for toenail fungus to resolve on its own. This can lead to discoloration and changes in nail thickness, which is sometimes painful with direct pressure.

Treatment

There are various conservative options available for toenail fungus including:

  • Topical medications
  • Oral antifungal medications
  • Laser therapy

If a patient is unresponsive to non-surgical treatments, surgical removal of the nail may be considered.
