What is Turf Toe?
Turf toe is a common sports injury that results in a sprain of the big toe joint.
Causes and Symptoms
Turf toe occurs due to hyperextension of the joint on turf or artificial surfaces. At risk athletes include football and basketball players and dancers. Symptoms can include pain, swelling and difficulty walking or pushing off the big toe joint.
Treatment
Turf toe usually responds well to conservative treatment. This can include:
- Immobilization
- Anti-inflammatories
- Rest and Activity Modification
- Shoe gear changes
Turf toe can be treated surgically, however this is only considered with severe pain or resistance to conservative treatment.
